Walking Route

Another short section, but one worth lingering over. Borrowdale, the setting for Stage 9, is arguably the most beautiful of the Lakeland valleys. Certainly, it was a favourite haunt of the 18th-century visitors arriving in search of the 'picturesque'. They would take in the framed views from the early tourist guide William Gilpin's carefully selected 'stations' around Derwentwater, chosen to include all the elements considered necessary for the picturesque - an awesome precipice, a mirror-smooth lake or serpentine river, and perhaps a lowly peasant or herd of cattle in the foreground.
