Details

The Lake District Dark Skies Weekend with Calvert Lakes is a fully catered residential weekend giving stargazers the opportunity to take part in a variety of night-sky activities as part of the Lake District Dark Skies Festival. This weekend is accessible* to those with both physical and learning disabilities as our centre is fully equipped with a range of specialist equipment. Prices are based on 2 people sharing a twin room with all rooms having en-suite wet rooms.

Friday 21 February
• 3-6pm; arrival and check-in
• Opportunity to use the onsite swimming pool either immediately before, or after dinner
• 6-7pm; Dinner
• 7-8pm: Presentation on the ‘Dark Skies Park’ concept by the Friends of the Lake District
• 8-11pm: Space Film Night (title TBA) in our small bar / games room

Saturday 22 February
• 8-9am; Breakfast with cooked and non-cooked options
• 9.30am – 12.30pm ; Excursion to Ambleside on centre minibuses to visit the Friends of the Lake District Planetarium and space rock display
• 12.30-2pm; Packed lunch back at the centre
• 2-4.30pm; Nights skies talk and presentation
• 4.30 – 5.45pm; Optional pool visit
• 6-7pm; Dinner
• 7.15-10.15; Excursion into Forestry England reserve (Dodd Wood) for guided stargazing with teas, coffees and hot chocolate
• 11pm; Return to centre

Sunday 23 February
• 8-9am; Breakfast with cooked and non-cooked options
• 10am: Departure

Directions:

Situated on the A591 3 miles north of Keswick.

If traveling from the south or east, make your way to J40 of the M6 (Penrith) and follow signs to Keswick / A66 west. Keep on the A66 until you come to the large roundabout on the outskirts of Keswick. Take the 3rd exit north signposted A591 / Bothel / Carlisle. The entrance to the centre is on the right hand side of the road overlooking the start of Bassenthwaite Lake just before the Dodd Wood carpark.

If travelling from the North or North East, make your way to J44 of the M6 (Carlisle North) and follow signs to Workington / A689 west. Follow the A689 Carlisle relief road clockwise until you meet the roundabout junction with the A595. Take the 3rd exit on the A595 towards Workington. Keep on the A595 towards Workington until you come to the village of Bothel, where you take the left hand turn south onto the A591 signposted to Keswick. Stay on the A591 until you see Bassenthwaite Lake on the right. At the end of Bassenthaite Lake and just past Dodd Wood carpark, the entrance to the centre is on the left.
